Food Poisoning
Food Poisoning is unfortunately very common. It is estimated by the Food Standards Agency that 5.5 million people in the United Kingdom alone contracts food poisoning every year, yet, due to varying degrees of severity - less than 100,000 cases are reported.
Food poisoning normally takes place after food or drink we have just consumed has bacteria, parasites, viruses or chemicals contained within it. By some distance, the most common is through bacterial food poisoning.
Symptoms of food poisoning
Symptoms can develop rapidly, within 30 minutes, or slowly, worsening over days to weeks. Most of the common contaminants cause:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach cramps
- Fever
Thankfully the vast majority of food poisoning cases are serious enough to have any long lasting problems and the illness lasts one to two days. However, in some cases, food poisoning can be much more serious and long-lasting, particularly if the victims are very young or old.
